841. . 0-1. . Rebels . 12. team

Lost to Florida Gators 51-35

Former Tennessee football head coach Lane Kiffin’s first game as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels certainly involved a lot of scoring, and as an offensive mind with a few weapons, that was to be expected. However, he still lost pretty badly to the Florida Gators, and similar to the Missouri Tigers, this wasn’t as close as it looked on paper.

After hanging around for the first quarter, Florida scored three straight touchdowns in the second and third quarters to go up 35-14, and they continued to lay it on Ole Miss’ defense, which showed itself to be no better under Kiffin than it was under Matt Luke. At one point, the Gators had a 44-21 lead in the fourth quarter and were on a 30-7 run.

That was when, similar to Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida didn’t have to go all out on defense. As a result, Ole Miss had a couple of meaningless scores. However, the Gators, while not caring, still managed to score another touchdown in between those scores. Simply put, this game was much closer because of garbage points.

Matt Corral and Jerrion Ealy make a great backfield, and Elijah Moore’s breakout game with 227 receiving yards is to be commended. That offense is enough for us to put these guys ahead of Mizzo and the Arkansas Razorbacks for now, but this defense will hold these guys down here early. Up next, though, they have a chance at an upset with a trip to the Kentucky Wildcats.
