2. Vols over 39.5

Here’s an oxymoron. I picked Ole Miss to beat Tennessee football and to cover the spread. However, I actually think it’s a better bet that the Vols go over 40 points than Ole Miss. My prediction is based on just what I think will happen. The most certain outcome, though, is UT crossing that threshold given what Josh Heupel’s offense is doing.

Ole Miss has a significantly worse defense than the Vols, which you can read about here. It’s legitimately worse than South Carolina’s or Missouri’s defense, and Rocky Top scored 45 and 62 points against those two schools respectively.

Taking that into account, how could anybody not believe that the Vols will go over 40 against the Rebels? This is a team that just allowed Arkansas to score 52 points. It also spotted Alabama a 42-0 lead and would have given up 60 points in that game had Nick Saban not called off the dogs in the third quarter.

This is a rush defense ranked outside of the top 100 nationally, and the run game is where the Vols dominate. As a result, you could see a Mizzou-type performance from them in this game, even if Ole Miss’ defense is slightly better than Mizzou’s.
