Tennessee football: Top 10 Vols from out-of-state on 2022 roster
6’0″ 190 pounds
Welcome to the third player from Georgia. Jeremy Pruitt recruited that state hard early on when he took over Tennessee football. Warren Burrell returns with some red flags after how bad the Vols’ secondary was in the Music City Bowl against the Purdue Boilermakers without Alontae Taylor. That earned Kamal Hadden and Brandon Turnage looks here.
However, the graduate of North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Ga., is definitely the most proven of those players, and even if he can’t lock down the No. 1 cornerback spot, he’s solid as the No. 2 cornerback. Missing spring ball probably hurt his chance to take that top spot, but he should still be locked in as a starter.
Last year, Burrell had five pass deflections, two tackles for a loss and 41 solo tackles, 32 of which were solo. He also had the highest PFF regular season grade of every defensive back returning this year, so you can’t ignore what he’s been able to bring to the table so far.
There will be competition this year with Desmond Williams, Andre Turrentine and Wesley Walker in addition to Hadden and Turnage, and De’Shawn Rucker and Christian Charles are still developing. However, Burrell has three years of starting experience with Tennessee football, and he did produce last year, so he belongs on this list.
