One of the most pleasant surprises for the Tennessee Vols football team this past campaign was no question the emergence of standout defensive back Jermod McCoy. Thanks to his brilliant play, Tennessee's defense was stout and he took home Second-Team All-SEC honors.

However, McCoy's status for the start of the 2025 season is now very much in question. According to reporter Austin Price of On3's Volquest, the superstar cornerback was back home in Texas sneaking in some offseason workouts before returning to Knoxville. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL during one of those workouts and he has already undergone surgery for it:

Tennessee CB Jermod McCoy will miss spring ball after tearing his ACL

Per Price's sources, McCoy is scheduled to get back on the field 'near' the start of the 2025 campaign, which tells us it's totally up in the air if he'll be ready to rock for Week 1 or not. Obviously, he'll be out for spring ball due to this injury.

It's terrible luck for McCoy that this happened, as the rising CB was ready to build off of what was an incredible 2024 campaign for him. This past season, McCoy, who transferred in from Oregon State, finished with 44 total tackles and four interceptions.

Capturing his Second-Team All-Conference nod was great, though plenty of Tennessee fans were pretty dang upset he wasn't a First-Team selection - hard to argue with that. McCoy came away with some massive plays for UT, perhaps none bigger than his interception at home against Alabama.

On Wednesday, the big news arrived that Tim Banks will be back as defensive coordinator and he's going to have his unit looking sharp once again next fall. Unfortunately for him, however, it's looking like he may not have his top CB on the field for the start of the year. McCoy could end up making a speedy recovery and get back on the field sooner rather than later, but regardless this is a bummer of a setback for him.
