There's really no way to put any kind of a spin on the deflating news that has come out of Knoxville - stud safety Edrees Farooq, who was expected to take a huge step forward for Josh Heupel and Co. this season, is out for the year. This week, Farooq went down during practice and was taken to the hospital.
It has since been announced that Farooq suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. Just like that, he becomes the second key player on defense to be ruled out for the year, joining sophomore linebacker Jaedeon Harmon in getting the brutal update. In addition to that, Miami transfer Jadais Richard won't be able to suit up in '26 due to an upper-body injury.
"We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process," Tennessee said in a statement delivering the news of the injury. "We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall."

Tennessee will hope DB Dejuan Lane can step up with Edrees Farooq out for the season
Again, there's no way to sugargoat things here, as this is a massive blow for the Tennessee secondary. And it provides new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles with yet another issue that he's going to have to fix.
Throughout the offseason, much has been said about the pass-rush, as 5-star transfer Chaz Coleman is no longer with the program. In the middle of the D, Harmon being lost for the year also stings. Add in this news on Farooq, and it results in Knowles and Heupel not being able to count on another standout starter to make plays once the campaign gets here.
So, who's going to step up for the Vols now that Farooq won't be able to suit up this fall? Plenty of attention is surely going to go to Dejuan Lane, as the 6-2, 215-pounder is no stranger to seeing the field. Last year, Lane posted 29 total tackles and one sack. TJ Metcalf, a Michigan transfer, should get the starting spot at the other safety position.
Lane is going to go from a reliable backup to someone who's going to have to deliver for Knowles and fill the void of not having Farooq around. That won't be easy, as Farooq finished with 76 tackles, four forced fumbles and two interceptions in 2025.
Farooq was going to be counted on to be a leader for the defensive backs as a whole, but this unfortunate adversity has arrived for him. We'll see how Lane can do in this new role, but it'll be on Knowles to make sure the defense doesn't suffer. That won't be easy, as Farooq is a playmaker. Losing him like this sucks, period.
