The Transfer Portal hasn’t been kind to Rick Barnes when it comes to departures, as the Vols have essentially lost most of their Elite Eight roster from last season. Bishop Boswell, JP Estrella, Jaylen Carey, and others have all decided to find new homes for next year. Add in all the players who have run out of eligibility, and Tennessee has to stack up a whole new roster for next seaosn.

Tennessee predicted to beat out UNC and Ohio State for elite transfer target

Looking at destinations for former Vols, Jaylen Carey will play at his third SEC school and has committed to Mizzou for next year. JP Estrella is off to the defending national champions in Michigan, and it looks like another Vol is going to join him in the Big Ten.

Bishop Boswell is on the move, as the former Tennessee starting shooting guard has committed to the Maryland Terrapins to play for Buzz Williams.

Former Vol Bishop Boswell is off to Maryland

This is an interesting destination for Boswell. He could have been a huge factor in the Vols' Final Four push this year, but he decided to go to a middle-of-the-pack Big Ten team that could have a solid year but won't be better than Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, etc. Instead of being on a really good Tennessee team, Boswell has chosen to be on a mediocre Maryland squad.

Boswell was never the most flashy player, but he's an extremely hard worker and a great on-ball defender. He was always doing a great job taking away the number one scorer on their opponent. He averaged only six points per game last year, but he was a really impactful player for Rick Barnes. This is a really good get for Maryland, and stings for the Vols.

Some believed NC State would be heavily in the mix for Bishop Boswell. With former Tennessee associate head coach Justin Gainey taking over, it seemed like a natural fit for a reunion. Boswell did take a visit to see Raleigh, but ultimately it didn’t materialize, probably due to financial factors.

All in all, Tennessee should be just fine, as they’ve been aggressive in replacing Boswell, but it still stings to see him go.
