With how much of a rollercoaster ride it has been for the Tennessee football team this offseason, sometimes it's easy to forget that cornerback Jermod McCoy suffered a serious knee injury. Back in January, the unfortunate update arrived.

That update was that McCoy tore his ACL while training back home in Texas. Immediately, his status for the start of the season was totally up in the air. As you might have been able to guess, head man Josh Heupel was asked about things at SEC Media Days.

While Heupel said that he has seen McCoy and that he's looking good in his rehab work, the veteran coach added that there's still no timetable for when he'll be able to get back on the field and practice. Because of this, it feels pretty likely he'll miss Week 1. How many games will he end up missing to start the new campaign?

Jermod McCoy Injury Update: No set timetable for star CB's return with Tennessee

"Obviously, we want him (on the field)," Heupel said via reporter Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News-Sentinel. "He's a huge part of us defensively. But we're keeping in mind his short term and long term health, as well."

The last thing Heupel wants to do is rush the preseason All-American back out onto the field too quickly. The Vols open the season on Aug. 30 in Atlanta against the Syracuse Orange and then there's a dance in Knoxville with East Tennessee State on the schedule for Sept. 6.

Then on Sept. 13, the Vols will host Georgia for what's expected to be an SEC thriller. Might Heupel give McCoy an extra two weeks to get his body fully ready and have him sit the contests against Syracuse and East Tennessee State? That'd be the right call.

However, ACL injury recoveries are always tricky. Who knows, McCoy might need even more time to get himself back to 100 percent and Week 3 could prove to be too early for him. It's unknown just when exactly McCoy will be on the field, but at this point, we shouldn't count on him being available for Tim Banks to start the new season. Next man up there, for now.
