It didn't take long, but the rest of the country is starting to take notice of what Tennessee football quarterback Joey Aguilar can get done with the ball in his hands. This past weekend in the devastating loss to Georgia, Aguilar was brilliant.
Through the air, he tossed for 371 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Aguilar added a rushing score, giving him five total TDs for the day. His Heisman odds are on the rise and he's also seeing a nice boost in the quarterback rankings.
At this time last week, Aguilar was ranked the No. 37 quarterback in the country according to CBS Sports. However, that's changed in a big way following Week 3, as CBS now has him slotted in at No. 14. While we think he should be higher, No. 14 is nothing to sneeze at.
Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar is flying up QB rankings after his strong start to the season
"Aguilar shined in his SEC debut by gashing the vaunted Georgia defense for 371 yards and four touchdowns in a crushing loss for Tennessee," CBS' David Cobb wrote. "It's been a circuitous journey to college football's big stage, but Aguilar is showing he belongs and looking like a perfect fit in coach Josh Heupel's offense."
Moving up 23 spots in the QB rankings shouldn't come as a surprise. If anything, the surprise is that Aguilar was No. 37 after the first two weeks. He's very much looking like an upperclassman who's become more than comfortable running Josh Heupel's system.
This weekend, Aguilar and the Vols are going to be taking on the UAB Blazers at Neyland Stadium and it's a game that the SEC side should have no issues in dominating. Is another 300-yard performance on the way for him this weekend? That could be on the way.
After that, the Vols will take on Mississippi State before going on a bye. Before you know it, the Oct. 18 matchup at Alabama will be here and that's a dance everyone can't wait for. Aguilar might be in CBS' Top 10 by then and a win in Tuscaloosa will have fans dreaming of a return trip to the CFP.
