Joey Aguilar's 'worst play of the day' at OTAs is why he was so desperate to stay at Tennessee

Joey Aguilar is finding out pretty quickly that life comes at you fast when you chase NFL dreams.

There is a reason why Joey Aguilar fought tooth and nail to get an extra year of eligibility. The former Tennessee Volunteers' starting quarterback went undrafted back in April, but ended up signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. As he battles for the QB3 job behind starter Trevor Lawrence and veteran backup Nick Mullens, let's just say Tuesday's exploits from practice have Aguilar behind the eight ball.

During a quick hitter for the Prowler Podcast, Gus Logue would describe the "worst play of the day."

“We’ll go with the worst play of the day. Joey Aguilar had a three-yard slant that turned into a contested catch. I’ve never seen that happen on a play that’s basically just 10 yards away. But it was a highlight reel for the [undrafted wide receiver] that ended up coming down with it.”

John Shipley would add that he would be very surprised if Carter Bradley does not end up as QB3...

“I will say: Carter Bradley is firmly in pole position for that QB3 job after today."

Here is everything that Logue and Shipley had to say on the latest episode of the Prowler Podcast.

While Aguilar looks like a long shot to make the Jaguars' 53-man roster, Josh Heupel and his staff could have really used him. Right now, it will be Faizon Brandon, George MacIntyre, and Ryan Staub competing for the starting job. It should be MacIntyre's to lose, but Staub has more in-game experience while at Colorado. Brandon offers a ton of upside, but he is the youngest of the trio here.

As folks who cover the Jaguars laugh at Aguilar's on-field struggles, Tennessee wishes it had him...

Joey Aguilar fought for an extra year of collegiate eligibility for a reason

It goes without saying that the Volunteers may be up against it when it comes to their quarterback room. While Heupel did land Aguilar after a tough situation involving Nico Iamaleava a little more than a year ago, Tennessee cannot have another down year in back-to-back seasons. Heupel has been on the job for over half a decade now. He cannot afford to see the Volunteers backslide during SEC play.

Had Aguilar been allowed to play one more year at Tennessee, the Vols would have a much greater chance of making the College Football Playoff. While they still very well might, because this is football and nothing is decided until all the games have been played, Aguilar would have covered up a lot of deficiencies and inexperience on the roster, especially at the quarterback position. It is what it is...

For now, Tennessee has no choice but to move forward without Aguilar. He must do the same now that he is being given an opportunity to compete in Jacksonville. Together, Aguilar and Tennessee were able to keep the rest of the SEC on its heels whenever the Vols came to town. While Brandon, MacIntyre, or Staub could do the same, Aguilar was a known commodity. Sadly, he is off to the NFL...

We can only hope a contested catch on a three-yard slant does not break Aguilar's will to compete.
