Amid the heavy focus on the college basketball Transfer Portal, Josh Heupel’s recruiting efforts for Tennessee football have somewhat flown under the radar. During spring practice, the Vols have been hard at work getting prospects and elite talent on campus. Tennessee even picked up a commitment from a top-100 recruit in Kesean Bowman.

With that said, Trennesse has just made the top-five for a four-star 5-foot-10, 210-pound running back, Tre Segarra. 247Sports has Seggara ranked as the No. 121 player in the class of 2027 and the No. 5 running back. The Vols will have to beat out in-state rival South Carolina and then defending national champion Indiana to earn his pledge. To add to that, Penn State and Stanford are also in the mix for the Duncan, South Carolina, product.

Segarra is one of the most talented backs that the Vols are after in the 2027 class. He is a do-it-all type of guy who can play all three downs. He doesn't have any weaknesses in his game, and he can run with a great blend of burst and power.

Tennessee makes the top-five for Tre Segarra

Tennessee making the final cut is a big deal for Heupel. Even more interesting, Segarra will be on campus for an official visit the weekend of June 12. If the Vols can knock it out of the park, it could set the stage for a commitment, though they’re also hosting a strong group of tailbacks this cycle.

What stands out the most is that the Vols have been aggressive in their pursuit of a star running back in the 2027 class. With DeSean Bishop likely gone after this year, whoever they bring in has a chance to compete from day one in Knoxville. Five-star In-state product David Gabriel Georges has been at the top of their recruiting board for several years. Also, the Vols are after Trey Martin and Andrew Beard, who are four-stars like Seggara. The aggressive approach from Heupel should pay off.

There is still a great deal of time left in this recruitment, but Tennessee has made it one step closer to landing Segarra.
