Tennessee has needed a Transfer Portal quarterback regardless of a starter, as they have only two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Josh Heupel swung and missed on Sam Leavitt, and ever since, it seems like the Vols are content with rolling out George MacIntyre or Faizon Brandon.

Tennessee football lands intriguing true freshman RB transfer with high upside

We have some news on where Vols are looking next in the Transfer portal, as Tennessee is bringing in an experienced quarterback who happens to be young.

Pete Nakos of On3 is reporting that Colorado quarterback Ryan Staub is visiting Tennessee on Sunday.

Ryan Staub could be a good backup for the Vols

Ryan Staub is a former 3-star quarterback from Stevenson Ranch, California, whom Deion Sanders recruited in 2023. Staub would have two years of eligibility if he were to commit to Josh Heupel.

In 2025, Staub completed 54.5% of his passes, recording 427 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. Staub is considered a high-end backup, as LSU and Kentucky also brought him in for visits. In a game versus Delaware, he had 158 yards and two touchdowns, completing 70% of his passes.

He likely would be in the open competition next fall with MacIntyre and Brandon, but he is not expected to be the guy. This is merely an insurance policy for Heupel. If one of the young quarterbacks gets hurt, he would offer depth and Power Four experience.

Josh Heupel has been selective with what quarterbacks he has been going after, so he must really like the ability Staub brings. Staub is noted as a good leader who has a solid arm and can move well for a quarterback.

This is by no means a flashy move, but adding Staub would help Tennessee in 2026. Tennessee has been hot in the portal this weekend, and it could continue with the addition of Staub if the visit goes well.

I’m confident that Josh Heupel has the quarterback situation under control. He has always had great offenses in Knoxville, and it won't be tamed in 2026. The reality is, fans will have to trust the veteran coach whether they like it or not.
