Now is the time for the Tennessee Volunteers to roll out the red carpet for five-star running back David Gabriel Georges. While he is not slated to be making his commitment for two more months, it does seem like a two-team race for the Baylor School standout. Although Georgia and Ole Miss are still vying for him, it might come down to Tennessee and the Ohio State Buckeyes for his five stars...
Unfortunately for Vols fans, Rivals' Steve Wiltfong wrote about how he likes for Ohio State to land him.
“I’m still riding with my prediction in favor of Ohio State for Chattanooga (TN) Baylor School five-star running back David Gabriel Georges. With the way the Buckeyes have developed and showcased running backs, to the consistency of the program, to the competitive NIL opportunities, Ohio State checks the most boxes, and is the best fit.”
According to the 247Sports Composite, Gabriel Georges is the No. 1 prospect from Tennessee, the No. 2 running back in the country, and the No. 10 overall player in the 2027 recruiting cycle. Gabriel Georges has official visits lined up with Ohio State on May 29, Tennessee on June 5, Ole Miss on June 12, and Georgia on June 19. He is supposedly going to be making his commitment on July 22.
Let's just say that Tennessee needs to make sure his June 5 visit goes off without any sort of hitch...
Tennessee could get beaten out by Ohio State for David Gabriel Georges
This would be problematic for Josh Heupel and his staff for a multitude of reasons. Not only is he the best player in-state, but the Vols missed out on two other strong running back prospects in this cycle. Kemon Spell has been committed to Georgia for a minute now, while Andrew Beard just picked Florida over the Vols and a few others during his more recent commitment. Tennessee cannot miss out here.
What is important to know is running backs have become more like quarterbacks in recent recruiting cycles. Just because a player stars in-state does not guarantee that he will conveniently pick the banner program of note. You have to work for it. For as savvy of an offensive mind as Heupel is, Ohio State is arguably the best program in the history of college football. There is also this to consider, too.
Gabriel Georges may play at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, but he is not a native of Tennessee. He originally hails from Quebec. That could also play a part in him choosing to play slightly closer to home in Columbus, as opposed to in Knoxville. Overall, Tennessee does find itself in a slightly strange predicament here. Gabriel Georges gets a home-state label without necessarily being of that variety.
To tie a bow on this, it does seem like Gabriel Georges is willing to keep an open mind about every school that he is going to visit with, including Tennessee. While Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama, or whomever will have work to do, Tennessee still remains to be a serious finalist to get him. Ohio State may be the team to beat, but the Buckeyes can get gotten. The Vols need to have a real game plan..
For now, Tennessee has less than a month to show Gabriel Georges that he must come to Rocky Top.
