Josh Heupel knows Tennessee's penalties issues will make or break a win vs. Kentucky

The Volunteers need to play smart football if they want to take down the No. 8 team in the country.

There is no room for error in this do-or-die matchup in SEC country.

This is the mindset that Josh Heupel and Tennessee must have in mind as the Vols get ready to host No. 8 Kentucky this weekend in what is sure to be a blockbuster meeting. While Tennessee is a touchdown favorite in what indeed should be a thriller, the home team cannot afford to play sloppy football if it expects to leave Neyland Stadium with a win under its belt.

This is something coach Heupel understands, and it is also something that he's preaching to his guys ahead of kickoff in a major way.

The last time the Vols were on the field back in Week 8, 12 penalties for 90 yards were posted in the loss to South Carolina. The same kinds of mental mistakes cannot be repeated. Otherwise, the Vols will fall to 6-3 on the year, while also seeing any hope of reaching the College Football Playoff be eliminated.

Tennessee playing mistake-free football will be the difference in a win or loss against Kentucky this weekend

“I love the competitive makeup of this group," Heupel said on The Mike Keith Show this week. "Competitive composure. Where we’ve got to grow, we’ve got to grow in how smart we play. That’s penalties, pre-snap and post-whistle. It’s in our communication. Controlling the controllables. And I think that’s something that’s critical in this football game, you look at Kentucky (being) on the plus side of the turnover margin in a big way, one of top five in the country. Their quarterback has taken great care of the football. Their secondary has found a way to get their hands on balls and that’s going to be a huge part of the football game.”

That is a lot to chew on from Heupel, but it all makes a ton of sense right now. A lot of this is just simple pre-snap communication and making sure guys are lined up right. It is a ton about focus, too. Know your job, line up correctly, and be ready to rock.

This should always be the mindset, but it is multiplied by about 100 when you are getting ready for a conference game, and the season is on the line at the same time.

Kentucky will enter this matchup with all the confidence in the world - the Wildcats are 7-1 on the year, No. 6 in the CFP rankings, and even if Will Stein thinks he can replicate UT's fan noise, he has still done a remarkable job turning things around in Lexington.

The Wildcats, outside of Knoxville, have been one of the best stories in college football. However, it is time for a horror chapter to arrive thanks to Tennessee. The Vols don't need any additional motivation to record a win, as Heupel and his guys know what's at stake.

If Tennessee can play fundamentally-sound football, then grabbing win No. 7 on the year will be within reach. If the opposite turns out to be the case, though, then UK will make the Vols pay for it.
