The Tennessee Vols staff has been recruiting hard all offseason, and now we are in full swing. Now that the recruiting season is in Tennessee, it just took a big hit, losing one of its top defensive line targets to Ole Miss.
Pete Nakos signals who has the edge in Tennessee’s QB race
6-foot-8, 270-pound defensive lineman Marvin Nguetsop just committed to Pete Golding and the Ole Miss Rebels, fresh off his Tennessee visit last weekend. Tennessee clearly couldn’t do enough on its visit to sway him as he decided to go elsewhere. Last weekend’s barbecue still hasn’t produced any commits, and with no visitors this weekend, Tennessee has still yet to add anyone off of their first official visit weekend. It’s a bit disappointing that last week hasn’t really turned into anything, especially because it would’ve been nice to start the summer with some momentum. That said, there are still plenty of visits coming up, and it’s not crazy to think things could start to roll in quickly.

Tennessee loses Marvin Nguetsop to Ole Miss
This one doesn’t sit well, as he has been one of Tennessee’s biggest targets, physically and literally, in this cycle. He originally is from Germany and made his way to America to play football, and he has completely broken out. While he is still a bit of a project and has to work on his pad level, Nguetsop has all the potential in the world and has already been an All-American. This one hurts, especially since Tennessee hasn’t exactly done great with its defensive line targets. The lone defensive line commit is Kadin Fife, who is a solid prospect, but Rodney Garner needs more.
It wouldn’t hurt as much if Tennessee had lost him to Michigan or Michigan State, but it stings a lot more seeing him end up at conference rival Ole Miss. Jim Knowles is a great defensive mind, but he’s not really known as a top-tier recruiter. Meanwhile, Rodney Garner is one of the better recruiters out there, so if he couldn’t get it done, it probably just wasn’t meant to be. Now, Tennessee will have to keep working to close the gap on Nguetsop to work on a flip. If the Vols have a big fall, it wouldn't be crazy to think that Tennessee can pull off the flip.
Tennessee still has quite a few big-time defensive line targets coming to campus, but it won’t be until the weekend of June 19. Next weekend, James Pace II will be on campus, a four-star from DeMatha Catholic in Maryland. If the Vols’ staff can land him, it would be a nice bounce-back after losing Nguetsop.
Tennessee only has nine commits so far, so it's still a nice core, but they need to build on it with a few more commits in the coming weeks.
Some good news would be nice, and preferably soon.
