Josh Heupel has been killing it recruiting-wise for the Vols, but one prospect stands out above the rest, and losing him would be a gut punch. Five-star running back David Gabriel Georges is considered one of the best tailback prospects in years, and he is very close to making a decision. Right now, the Vols are going head-to-head with Ohio State for his pledge with Ole Miss and Georgia a step behind.

Right now, Gabriel Georges is ranked as the No. 10 player in the country by the 247Sports composite. The Chattanooga product has been a star for Baylor School and will likely have his big year ahead of him this fall as a senior. Heupel and running backs coach De'Rail Sims have been on him for a year, and on June 5, they will have to knock it out of the park on Gabriel Georges ' official visit.

Why Tennessee needs David Gabriel Georges

The David Gabriel Georges recruitment feels like it’s been going on forever. Tennessee has made him a priority for multiple years now, and since he’s an in-state guy, it feels like he’s been in Knoxville nonstop; that's why it would hurt so bad losing him. Gabriel Georges is taking four official visits to his four finalists. After that, Gabriel Georges is expected to announce his decision in July. Ohio State feels confident about where they stand, but so do the Vols. That’s why one fan base is ultimately going to be heartbroken when they miss out on him.

Not to mention, DeSean Bishop is probably gone after 2026, so the Vols need a replacement at running back. They have put so much energy into Gabriel Georges that missing him would hurt even more. However, if they were to land him, it would be a day-one-ready replacement who could be a difference-maker for Heupel.

That’s why July is such a huge moment for Tennessee. By the start of summer camp, the Vols could feel amazing about their recruiting class, or completely crushed. A lot depends on what David Gabriel-Georges decides.
