The Tennessee Vols have a tremendous-looking outlook next year, but the biggest weakness on the roster is the frontcourt. Tennessee lost Felix Okpara to eligibility, JP Estrella to Michigan, and Jaylen Carey to Missouri, leaving Rick Barnes to completely rebuild the big-man rotation.
Instead of going big-name hunting, Barnes took a more gritty approach. The Vols retained DeWayne Brown and added Miles Rubin from Loyola Chicago, along with Braeden Lue and Christian Fermin. It isn't the most talented group on paper, but Tennessee does have a capable unit that will help them win games.

Even with lower expectations surrounding the frontcourt, new Vol Miles Rubin doesn’t appear concerned. He recently met with the media and offered an encouraging perspective on the Vols’ frontcourt moving forward.
"I feel like we have an underrated frontcourt. I feel like a lot of people are counting us out and don't think that we have a better frontcourt than there is in this conference, but I feel like we can prove them wrong and show them that we have one of the best frontcourts in the conference."
Tennessee has a prove it mindset
This is the perfect kind of mindset for an underrated group. Tennessee doesn’t have the most talented players in the frontcourt, but they do have hard-working, gritty players who defend, rebound, and run the floor, and they seem to be determined to show that they are a top group.
Rubin is the perfect embodiment of that. He isn’t a traditional back-to-the-basket scorer, but he is an elite shot blocker and a strong rebounder. Braeden Lue, Christian Fermin, and DeWayne Vernon all bring similar traits.
None of them are true elite scorers, and that’s why Tennessee has such a strong group of guards. The bigs won’t be relied on to get buckets. Instead, they will catch lobs, get putbacks on offensive rebounds, and do what they can to get the ball to Juke Harris, Dai Dai Ames, and Jalan Hartlason. The Vols’ frontcourt will get it done with grit down low rather than pure talent, and that’s okay.
What this really means moving forward is that even though Tennessee has a ton of new faces on the roster, Rick Barnes’ team still has the gritty, punch-you-in-the-mouth mentality his teams always have.
Tennessee isn’t always the most talented team, but they are always tough and disciplined, and Barnes’ team is showing that once again.
