All offseason, Tennessee Vols fans have expected Jermod McCoy to go in the top half of the first round in the NFL Draft, with some even projecting him as a top-10 pick. On the other hand, cornerback Colton Hood has been viewed more as a late first-round prospect with a chance to slide into the second round.

Where do the top Vols prospects rank on draft boards ahead of NFL Draft

A recent update on Jermod McCoy’s injury could be shifting things. In Chris Simms’ latest NFL mock draft, Colton Hood is now projected to go No. 12 overall to the Dallas Cowboys, while McCoy drops to No. 31 to the New England Patriots.

Colton Hood rises as Jermod McCoy falls

This is a really interesting development that Simms brings up in his mock draft regarding the two standout corners. All offseason, it's been McCoy at the top, but he's slowly beginning to fall at the wrong time. Hood, on the other hand, is making up the ground with a fast rise to the top. Cornerbacks are a very important position, and teams always look to grab on early on, so it's no surprise teams have shifted their focus to Hood as McCoy's injury status has brought up some red flags.

Looking at the bigger picture, you have to feel for McCoy, as this isn't his fault. Teams are worried about the longevity of this knee after the injury, and that's not something that can be proven wrong in the here and now. If he were to fall, he surely would make the 31 teams that passed on him regret their decision, as he proved that he's a top player in this class regardless of position.

Don’t be shocked if this happens on draft night, as the chaos always seems to show up in the first round every year. Someone projected in the middle of the second round ends up going in the top 15, or a supposed top-10 pick slips into the second round. The NFL Draft is ruthless, and hopefully a former Vol isn’t a casualty of its unpredictable nature.
