Prime flip target for Tennessee football spurns Josh Heupel to stick with Alabama

The flip dream is dead for Vols fans.

Just when you thought the Tennessee football team was going to be able to pull a fast one on Kalen DeBoer and Alabama, some tough news has come in. Earlier this month, 4-star cornerback Zyan Gibson took his Tennessee official visit and he had a great time.

So much in fact that there was some buzz that Josh Heupel and Co. would be able to flip the Alabama commit. People have been waiting to see if Gibson was going to make some sort of a new announcement. He did, just not the kind that Vols fans were hoping for. On Monday night, news broke that Gibson is 100 percent locked in with Alabama and he won't be changing his mind:

4-star CB Zyan Gibson spurns Tennessee to stay committed to Alabama football

We hate to admit it, but this is huge for Alabama and it stings for the Vols. Gibson is a high 4-star recruit, with a 97.3 rating on the 247Sports Composite. He's the No. 3 cornerback in the country and the No. 46 player nationally for 2026.

He's a total baller and his future is bright. Shortly after his trip to Knoxville, there was indeed a ton of buzz that he might flip his commitment to the Vols. Less than two weeks later, we now know that's not going to end up happening.

Gibson took his Tennessee OV on June 13 and he followed that up with a trip to Tuscaloosa this past weekend. DeBoer knew there was a lot of pressure on the Tide to wow him and his family, which it looks like they were able to do.

Despite Gibson staying put with Alabama, Heupel has still put together a strong start to his '26 haul and plenty of big-name commits could be on the way soon. Yes, this is a minor setback to build recruiting momentum for the summer, but good news should be on the way from other targets before you know it.
