What in the world is Roger Goodell cooking? Now that ESPN is acquiring the NFL Network, it of course means that RedZone, no question one of the most watched programs each week during the football season, is heading to the Worldwide Leader in Sports.
This is something Goodell is of course quite happy about, but now he's got college football fans across the planet talking. That's because while speaking on SportsCenter, Goodell indeed hinted that a similar kind of production could be on the way on Saturdays down the road for the college game. Yeah, Tennessee football fans and many others would love to see this.
Roger Goodell being open to college football RedZone has everyone talking
“ESPN purchased the RedZone name and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football and other things,” Goodell said. “I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports. That’s something that they now own and have the ability to do that.”
How many of you out there love watching the Vols, but you also find yourself trying to keep up with other games as well? If you're also a Titans fan, you might have a close eye on other favorite players of yours on Sundays, or guys who you have on your fantasy football squads. That's the beauty of RedZone.
Having this be an option for the college game would be out of this world. No more flipping between all the different games on all of the other channels. Instead, you might be able to watch Tennessee on one screen if you want to stay focused, and then college RedZone for all the other action.
If this does end up happening, go ahead and cancel your plans for the weekend every fall for the next 10 years. Before we get too excited, keep in mind that this is all just being discussed and no formal plan has been presented for the next step to be taken. There are going to be a lot of moving parts.
Despite that, even the fact that this is on ESPN and Goodell's radar is pretty darn telling. Who knows how quickly things could get developed, but if it's within the next couple of years, the rest of the country and not just the Tennessee faithful will get a close look at 5-star commit Faizon Brandon and others putting on a show in Knoxville. Yup, you can go ahead and sign us up for that. Let's hope Goodell works quickly.
