Overall, Tennessee softball had a strong season, but that midseason slump is still sticking with fans. They finished 42–9, but losing a few big series in the middle of the year left some questions.

The good news is the SEC tournament could answer the doubt if Tennessee is elite or not. Yes, it was a rough stretch for the Tennessee Lady Vols in the middle of the year, going 5–6 over 11 games with losses to Mississippi State, Florida, Ole Miss, and South Carolina. Fans started getting restless with how they performed against the SEC’s best, but now they’ve got a shot to prove everyone wrong at the SEC Tournament.

Tennessee has a lot to prove

It’s worth noting that the Lady Vols softball team is still a top-10 team in the nation, even after finishing fifth in the conference. They’ll play on Wednesday evening in the SEC Tournament against the winner of South Carolina and Ole Miss, two teams that beat them earlier this season. If Tennessee wins, they’ll face Texas, a team they didn’t play in the regular season. Building on the momentum from the conference tournament will be vital. If Tennessee can carry some of this momentum into the NCAA tournament, they could do big things.

The Lady Vols are leading the SEC with a 1.92 team ERA, but the big question is the offense. They’re 10th in runs scored and 14th in hits, so the X-factor is getting the bats going. If not, it could be a short postseason.

Obviously, the main goal is simple for Tennessee: get back to Oklahoma City. And with ace Karlyn Pickens leading the way, they’ve got a real shot. She won the 2025 SEC Pitcher of the Year award and was dominant again this season with a 1.44 ERA and 154 strikeouts, but it all starts with a strong week at the SEC tournament.
