Tennessee fans are more than ready to retire all the Rick Barnes March Madness jokes

All he's done is lead the Volunteers into the Sweet 16 four consecutive seasons

Y'all still got jokes about Rick Barnes? It seems awfully quiet now that the Volunteers are back in the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive year.

In two of the previous three trips, Tennessee made it all the way to the Elite Eight. No one knows the final destination of this tournament journey, but it could put the 71-year-old in the Final Four for the first time since 2003 when he was coaching the Texas Longhorns.

In this day and age of college athletics, it's harder and harder to find consistency. Between the NIL, the transfer portal and players declaring early for the NBA Draft, it's hard to keep a program churning at a respectable rate. But not only has Barnes done that, but he's exceeded expectations. Four straight appearances in the Sweet 16 (five overall) puts Barnes in a class by himself among Tennessee basketball coaches.

There were some chuckles after Barnes signed a lifetime contract with the Vols this offseason, but athletic director Danny White appreciated what Barnes built and, more importantly, the way he has represented the school. Barnes' name often gets forgotten when talking about great basketball coaches, but the proof is in the results and he has delivered year-after-year.

Tennessee fans react to another Sweet 16 appearance

It's hard to win games in the NCAA tournament. Just because everything might come together one year doesn't mean it will happen again the next year. Barnes continues to take his teams into the deep waters of the tournament and Tennessee fans are beginning to appreciate the journey.

When the smoke from this weekend clears, 52 of the 68 teams that began the tournament last Tuesday will be back at home, including defending champion Florida, but for the fourth consecutive season, Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers are still standing. Now they are headed to Chicago, two steps closer to the Final Four.
