Spring practice offers the first glimpse into the future, as Tennessee’s freshmen take the field for their first real college action. With Josh Heupel bringing in his strongest recruiting class yet, the excitement around Knoxville is just beginning. While many fans want to see five-star freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, there is still an influx of defensive talent on the Vols' 2026 roster.

Jim Knowles already making impact as Tennessee's defense sets tone in scrimmage

One of those defensive stars is four-star linebacker Brayden Rouse. The Woodstock, Georgia, linebacker was rated as the No. 73 player in the nation in the class of 2027. He had an awesome off-season dominated the Navy All-American Bowl, and he looks to be building on that this spring.

Rouse made his presence felt in a highlight video from the spring scrimmage posted on X. In one standout moment, he tracks down the ball carrier and delivers a thunderous hit, showing exactly what he brings to the field.

Brayden Rouse could get some live action early in his career

It's no surprise that Rouse is looking good early on, given everything we know about him. He still looks a tad slim and will need to bulk up over the summer, but he is an elite athlete who played all over the field in high school. Tennessee is very deep at linebacker and is likely the strongest position group on the team. However, Rouse could find himself in the two-deep this fall if he keeps it up. Tennessee also brought in TJ White in the 2026 class, another top-100 linebacker. The future of the middle of the defense looks exceedingly bright.

Jim Knowles has everything he needs to turn Tennessee’s defense into an elite unit next season. They’ve already started to show flashes of that in the first scrimmage. Knowles' defense is typically known to have a steep learning curve, but with Tennesse bringing in so many former Penn State players who played under Knowles, the adjustment may not be nearly as severe.

The Orange and White game is on April 11, and I cannot wait to see Rouse live in action, along with the other Vols 2026 freshmen.
