Tennessee losing Joakim Dodson for the season creates multiple issues for Josh Heupel

This hurts in more ways than one for the Vols.

The eye-opening Tennessee win over Furman in Week 1 unfortunately didn't come without a cost. Early in the fourth quarter, wide receiver Joakim Dodson went down with an injury following a kickoff return, and he was clearly in a ton of pain. He was able to walk off the field with the help of trainers, but news just broke that he's officially out for the season. Brutal.

According to Tennessee insider Austin Priceless, Dodson suffered a serious LCL injury, which means he has played his last down in 2026. While he's not known for being a superstar on offense, he served as Braylon Staley's main backup in the slot. On top of that, though, he's a threat with his return abilities, so it's also a bit hit for the special teams group.

"You just hate it for him," Heupel said during his presser to start the new week. "One really good kickoff return. Unique just in how he gets tackled and the way he plants. From Year 1 finishing the season to January, just how he has prepared for practice, trained, saw great strides in him as a player, so it's disappointing you put all that work in and get one game of football. That's always hard for anyone who goes through that."

Joakim Dodson adds to the list of season-ending injuries for the Vols

You've got to feel for Dodson too, as the sophomore was hoping to see an increase in his workload this year, but his '26 is over before it could really even get started. The 6-0, 195-pounder becomes the fourth Tennessee player to suffer a season-ending injury, joining linebacker Jaedon Harmon, cornerback Jadais Richard, and safety Edrees Farooq.

With Dodson in particular, everyone got a great glimpse at his potential last December in the heartbreaking loss to Illinois in the Music City Bowl. With the Vols down by six, Dodson changed that with a return for the ages. He had people worried when he didn't catch the ball at first, but he flipped the script moments later:

Yes, the Vols lost that game, but Dodson gave us all a taste of what he's capable of. The same was the case against Furman, as he produced a nice return in the fourth quarter too, but it just sucks that he also ended his year at the end of that play.

On the official Tennessee vs. Furman depth chart, Heupel had the kick return job listed as Daune Morris 'or' Dodson. For the rest of the year, we now know that Morris, a speedy running back, will be tasked in handling those duties full go. That security of having Dodson around is no more, while at receiver you've got to imagine freshman Tyreek King will become Staley's main backup, though we'll learn more about that in practice in the coming days.

All in all, this is just a bummer for Dodson, and it's something Heupel would have obviously loved to avoid in the season-opener. With it being a long campaign, though, these types of setbacks are always expected, and it will be on the rest of the locker room to have a bit of a 'next man up' mentality with this Dodson injury adversity arriving ahead of Week 2 at Georgia Tech.
