After back-to-back losses to Texas in the Womens College World Series, the Lady Vols came up short in Oklahoma City once again, this time in the semifinals. Not only did the loss sting, but it also marked the final time star pitcher Karlyn Pickens would wear a Tennessee uniform. After the game, both Pickens and head coach Karen Weekly were understandably very emotional.
Following the game, Weekly shared a heartfelt message about Pickens and her character.
"In this day and age when people jump ship and do it for the dollars, Karlyn had those opportunities, and Karlyn said, no, I'm a Lady Vol through and through,” said Weekly. “That meant so much to me."

Karlyn Pickens is a Lady Vol for life
What a great message about a great player. You have to feel for Coach Weekly and Pickens, as even though they were great at Tennessee, they never won the ultimate prize, and that’s okay. Pickens could have gone anywhere in the country for a blank check, but she didn’t, and Lady Vols fans should forever respect her for that. Instead of joining a super team, Pickens decided to be a Tennessee Vol through and through, and she was amazing.
Pickens racked up pretty much every accolade possible. She was a two-time SEC Pitcher of the Year, a consensus All-American, and SEC Freshman of the Year. Even with all those honors, it still doesn’t fully capture how dominant she was. When all is said and done, she will go down as the best Tennessee softball player ever, and in an era where it’s normal to leave, she stayed and built a long-lasting legacy.
In her career, Tennessee never had enough run support or offense to get over the hump, and she will probably go down as one of the biggest “what ifs” in Tennessee athletics.
The next step for Pickens is representing Team USA and playing professionally for the Carolina Blaze in the AUSL, where she was taken No. 1 overall. At the next level, she should continue to be a dominant star, because that’s exactly what she is.
