Tennessee Vols running back/kick returner Devrin Young is “nowhere ready to be game ready yet” according to head coach Butch Jones.
Young, a senior from Knoxville, injured his ribs in Tennessee’s win over Chattanooga on October 11. In his absence, true freshman Evan Berry has worked as the Vols’ primary kick returner.

With only three games left in the season, it’s possible that Young’s career at Tennessee is over. He still has a chance to get back on the field, but it certainly seems like a long shot after Jones’ diagnosis on Tuesday after practice.
The injury leaves the Volunteers in a bit of a bind at running back. Marlin Lane was injured in the Vols’ win against South Carolina last Saturday and his status moving forward is unclear.
If Lane is out, it would be a spot where Young would see more playing time. With Young unable to go, I’d expect to see a lot more of Derrell Scott and Justus Pickett.
Young has six carries for 24 yards this season, to go along with four receptions for 31 yards. He’s averaging 21.5 yards per kick return.
