Zach Azzanni Explains New Position With Vols

A byproduct of Tennessee hiring Mike DeBord as the program’s new offensive coordinator last month was the promotion of wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni to passing game coordinator, a position he previously held under Urban Meyer at Florida.

On Wednesday, Azzanni told Vol fans, in a YouTube Q&A session, what he’ll be doing in his new position.

"Azzanni: I’m in charge of making sure I game plan the passing game. Our third down, our red zone. We do a lot of things as a staff, but ultimately, I’m the one at the forefront of breaking it down and giving suggestions. In practice, I’ll set up routes on air, script seven on seven, those kinds of things that relate to the passing game. Most of my guys are involved in the passing game. Sometimes, Coach DeBord, as the offensive coordinator, might want to go down to inside drill while we have one on ones going on. I will make sure one on ones against the defensive backs in practice are going well, because I’m in charge of those guys. We work as a staff together, but the passing game part is taking control of the offseason projects and how to get better in the passing game."

It sounds like Azzanni will be much more involved in the offensive game planning, essentially making him a “deputy offensive coordinator”, if you will.

The move will certainly prepare Azzanni to be a offensive coordinator at this level, somewhere down the road.

In fact, if the Volunteers have a successful offensive season in 2015, I wouldn’t be surprised if Azzanni has some suitors after the season.

There will come a day when Azzanni moves on from Tennessee. He has a bright future that likely includes being a head coach at some point.

Tennessee is fortunate to have Azzanni and they need to hold on to him as long as possible.
