Butch Jones Pushing Hard For New Traditions

I love college football more than pro football for a lot of reasons, but one of the main reasons are the incredible traditions.

Tennessee has plenty of great traditions.

Butch Jones, however, believes there’s room for more.

Jones is pushing for fans to recite the game maxims before every home game.

The game maxims are obviously one of the great Vol traditions, but I’m not sure reciting them before the team runs through the T is a great idea.

Tennessee’s pre-game tradition is pretty much perfect as it is. The buildup from the Pride Of The Southland Band’s pre-game performance builds to a crescendo with the forming of the T.

Reading the maxims over the loudspeaker, while a nice thought, would take away from that buildup.

More from Vols Football

I applaud Jones for searching for more traditions for the Volunteers to rally around. But I’m not sure this is the right one. I have a feeling it will go the way of the “fist up” defense, which quickly faded.

Jones should keep searching. Something will eventually stick.

And if it doesn’t, then oh well. The Vols already have some of the best traditions in college football.
