Former Vols QB Speaks About Departure

Riley Ferguson never played a down of football at Tennessee (outside of a spring game appearance), yet at one time he was considered the savior of UT football by fans.

It didn’t pan out that way for the Charlotte native, as he transferred from Tennessee after his redshirt freshman season.

Ferguson, who hasn’t spoke much about leaving Knoxville, recently spoke to the Charlotte observer about his departure from Rocky Top.

The former Vol told the Observer that Tennessee was “never the right fit” and that he woke up every day feeling “miserable”.

"From The Charlotte Observer:I had committed to coach (Derek) Dooley and he got fired and coach (Butch) Jones (and staff) came in. I didn’t know them like that. We had good relationships, but I used to wake up every day miserable and I got tired of feeling like that."

Ferguson did say that he liked Tennessee and that sometimes he wishes he would’ve stayed, because he thinks he would’ve played last season and possibly this upcoming season.

It might be true that Ferguson would’ve received a chance last season, but there’s no doubt that Tennessee found their guy in Josh Dobbs.

As for Ferguson’s future?

Well he’s enrolling at Coffeyville (Kan.) junior college, where he hopes to play one season.

Ferguson currently has an offer from Arkansas State and Coffeyville’s head coach Aaron Flores says Arkansas, Texas and Florida are interested.

Vol fans are certainly happy with Dobbs at the helm, but the idea of having to face Ferguson at Florida has to be a little scary.

You can’t deny that Ferguson is talented and if he gets his head straight, he could be deadly in the SEC.

And that’s the last thing Vol fans want to see happen.
