The Maxwell Football Club announced the Watch List on Tuesday for the 79th Maxwell award, which is named for Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell and given to the college football player of the year.
This is the first time any Tennessee Vols were on the Maxwell Award Watch List since 2012, when Tyler Bray and Da’Rick Rodgers were on it, according to UT Sports.
They are one of 12 teams with multiple players on the Watch List.
The Vols have had only one Maxwell Award winner in their history: Peyton Manning in 1997.
Manning is one instance in which the Maxwell Award winner was not the Heisman Trophy winner.
The excitement behind Dobbs and Hurd is warranted, but it could be a little premature. That’s not necessarily true for Hurd, who had a strong season all year last year.
But it is true for Dobbs. Let’s not forget that Dobbs is gaining credibility because he played well in the second half against Alabama after the Tide called off the dogs, he had an epic final five minutes against a South Carolina team that struggled to transition to a 3-4 defense, and he blew out two teams with bad defenses in Kentucky and Iowa.
That is not enough yet to say he belongs on the Maxwell Award Watch List, but hey, Vol Nation won’t complain. Getting respect and hype is something they have wanted for a while, and it finally appears to be coming.
Can they measure up to it?
