Prediction

There will not be any new tight ends committing to Butch Jones and the Tennessee Volunteers for the 2016 recruiting class. With two commitments in already in play and the position set for the next few years, it would make no sense for Jacob Mathis or Naseir Upshur to commit to play for Tennessee when so many teams could use a tight end right now.

If you go to Tennessee, you have to wait two year just to compete for the starting job, and there are two other players you will have to jump over. It is simply too much for a freshman tight end who has the chance to play immediately at so other elite schools to decide to do.

The prospects appear to be thinking the same thing as well.

Mathis is clearly looking into the Florida schools primarily, and even if he does not go there, Tennessee is certainly not on his radar at this point, so there is no reason to waste hope on him. Meanwhile, Upshur is looking heavily at Big Ten country with the exception of Florida State, Alabama, and a couple of Pac-12 schools. So neither one would fit into the Tennessee camp.

Overall, the Vols should focus more heavily on other positions and let the tight end position go for this year since they already have two. It would be a waste of time otherwise.
