Fayton, who played at Tennessee from 2002 to 2005, has an undergraduate, a masters, and a law degree all from the university. He was a two-time Academic All-SEC selection and played for the Chicago Bears and New York Jets in 2006.

During his time with the Vols, Fayton  was never a No. 1 option, but he had plenty of key catches throughout his career as Casey Clausen, Erik Ainge, and Rick Clausen all relied on him at different points.

Fayton’s most notable play came in 2003 when the Vols beat the Alabama Crimson Tide 51-43 in five overtimes. In the midst of a two-game losing streak, Tennessee was facing a 4th and 19 in the second overtime and had to convert to keep the game alive. Fayton found a wide-open spot in Alabama’s zone coverage, and Clausen hit him easily for the first down. Here is the play.

That was a play that saved the season for the Vols. They had been on a two-game losing streak, and a loss to Alabama would have derailed the 2003 season down the lines of the 2002 season. Instead, the Vols won out during the regular season, highlighted by a win over Miami, to finish 10-2 and capture a share of the SEC East.

They did lose their bowl game to Clemson, but that had a lot more to do with playing football in the Peach Bowl at the end of the year and not caring about the game.

Still, Fayton will always be remembered for that play. Vol Nation wishes him the best at Maryville.
