The game will be televised nationally on ESPN in primetime on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, 2017, according to a report from the Knoxville News Sentinel.
"“We are looking forward to and are very excited to open the 2017 season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta,” said UT coach Butch Jones. “It will be a great opportunity for our program to play in a new state-of-the-art facility while playing on a national stage. The state of Georgia is very important to us in recruiting footprint, and that coupled with our alumni base and passionate fans, will make for a very exciting experience.”"
On Saturday before the Monday game, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florid State Seminoles will also play each other to open up the season.
This does not quite have the magnitude that next year’s Battle at Bristol is going to have when the Vols play the Virginia Tech Hokies at the Bristol Motor Speedway, but opening in a unique setting like this is always exciting.
Tennessee opened the season against N.C. State in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game in 2012 in the Georgia Dome, breaking the dreaded cursed stadium that had haunted the Vols since the 2001 season.
This will give us a first-hand look if the new Atlanta Falcons stadium brings with it a similar curse because, in all honesty, the curse of that building alone derailed the career of Phillip Fulmer.
This would seem to be a road game for the Vols since Georgia Tech plays in Atlanta, but as we know Tennessee has a huge presence in Atlanta, and with an even split of tickets it’s likely that the Vols have more fans than the Yellow Jackets at the game.
