Final Take

This year’s offensive line is much deeper and much more experienced than it was last year. And the new recruiting class is loaded with raw talent.

As such, there are lots of reasons to believe that this unit will be significantly improved this year, but there are still major questions overall.

It’s hard to be excited about a lot of returning starters that struggled so much last year, but all the evidence points to them being much improved. If there are still some black marks on the line, Butch Jones has a cluster of newcomers he should be able to pick from.

The line should not be expected to be great because it is still inexperienced, but there are still three seniors and lots of highly touted recruits, so there is no excuse for it to be as bad as it was last year.

If the Tennessee Vols skill players can reach their potential, the line is deep enough to allow for playmakers to shine this year and put up big numbers. Add in a more mobile quarterback, and you have all the tools necessary to be able to run Jones’s up-tempo system.

When Jones took over the job in 2012, he said he does not like to use the term “spread offense” because it implies finesse, and he insisted his team would be physical. But it is time to finally show that with the offensive line this year.

They don’t have to be great, but they need to be much better than last year. And the talent, depth, and experience are there.
