7. Winning the SEC East

This is a potentially attainable goal that could come with a few breaks bouncing the right way. The Vols have already been named by quite a few coaches and media members as a team that could win the SEC East, and they are already predicted to finish second in the division, so obviously, moving up one spot is not that crazy.

The big team believed to be standing in the way of the Vols for this accomplishment this year is Georgia, and Tennessee gets the Dawgs at home, which makes this a very strong possibility.

But what is forgotten in all this is that there is still the issue with the Florida Gators and that losing streak, and that is a road game, and the Missouri Tigers are also a road game. South Carolina and Arkansas at home are also potential losses to hurt their conference record, and Kentucky on the road could be tough as well. Then there’s Alabama.

So at the end of the day, Georgia is not the only team team standing in Tennessee’s way. Still, the goal for this season has to be to remain in contention for the SEC East division title. When we say contention, we literally mean until the last two weeks of the regular season.

If the Vols are out of contention before they play Missouri on the road, then this season is a failure. That does not mean they have to win it, and that doesn’t even mean they have to have control of their own destiny at that point. But unless Georgia goes undefeated this year, which we are all pretty sure they won’t do, Tennessee should be in the race.

If they don’t win it, that’s fine, but it would be a nice, attainable goal.
