Tennessee Vols Football Team Moves Up to No. 23 in AP and Coaches Polls

The Tennessee Volunteers football team moved up two spots to No. 23 in the AP Poll Top 25 and the Coaches Poll Top 25 Tuesday following Week One.

After a 59-30 win over the Bowling Green Falcons this past week, the Tennessee Vols moved up in both polls. But it probably was not as much as they would have liked.

The AP Poll and the Amway Coaches Poll were released Tuesday afternoon, and Tennessee came in at No. 23 in both polls after being No. 25 in both preseason polls.

Plenty of teams played weaker competition than the Vols did, and many looked bad. But despite winning 59-30, it appears as if Bowling Green’s ability to stay in the game before the lightning delay left a lasting impression on many of the voters.

After all, it’s not like Tennessee looked that much worse than a lot of the other teams.

But perhaps it could just be based on the fact that they were ranked barely in the Top 25 and did not do enough to jump teams ahead of them. That will change this week when they meet the Oklahoma Sooners, who are No. 17 in the Coaches Poll and No. 19 in the AP Poll.

The SEC set a record in the AP Poll with 10 teams in the Top 25, including all seven SEC West teams along with Georgia, Tennessee, and Missouri.

There were nine in the Coaches Poll, which is still pretty impressive.

The SEC pride is another reason that this Oklahoma game is huge for the Vols at Neyland Stadium Saturday night, but they will be focusing on it for themselves more than anything else. Still, all around, these Top 25 rankings make the game more crucial than ever, as both teams will desperately feel like they need a win.

Here is a look at the polls for Week Two, with the AP Poll first and the Coaches Poll second.
