Top 25 Rankings: Tennessee Vols Drop Out of Both Polls
The Tennessee Volunteers football team dropped out of the AP and Coaches Top 25 rankings after their 31-24 double-overtime loss to the Oklahoma Sooners.
Just like the last time the Vols were in the Top 25 and hosted a big game at Neyland Stadium, they failed to maintain their position.
Tennessee’s heartbreaking loss to Oklahoma was enough for the voters to knock them out of both polls, and it was only right that they do so.

It may seem unfair, but the Vols actually need to prove themselves in big games before they actually get to be back in the Top 25 rankings. They keep coming up short when it matters most.
And while Oklahoma is a non-conference game that will not derail Tennessee’s season, it is still a game they should have held onto. Losing it after a 17-0 lead was disastrous and further drives home the point that this team does not yet know how to win.
Here are the Top 25 rankings for the AP and Coaches Polls.

There were three SEC teams overall that dropped from the AP Poll, and two dropped out of the Coaches Poll.
And Auburn and Missouri obviously came very close to dropping out of the polls, but they held onto victories against very inferior opponents.
Nonetheless, it was clearly a rough week for the SEC overall after the conference’s strong opening weekend. Arkansas’s loss, Tennessee’s loss, and the struggles of two of the Tigers teams looked really bad.
Meanwhile, after a terrible opening weekend, the Big Ten looked better than anybody this past weekend, as Michigan State beat Oregon and Michigan then beat Oregon State, so one state was clearly superior in these two match-ups.
There are only four teams from the conference in the Top 25, but that could change.
Seven were from the SEC, another five came from the Pac-12, four were from the Big 12, three came from the ACC, and two were Independents.
