Tennessee Vols Overcome Multiple Losing Streaks With Victory Over Georgia Bulldogs

The Tennessee Vols football team overcame numerous losing streaks in their 38-31 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. It was a huge hurdle for the Volunteers.

Better late than never. Right?

Two weeks ago, the Tennessee Volunteers had the chance to erase multiple losing streaks against the Florida Gators had they held onto that lead. But of course, they failed.

However, against the Georgia Bulldogs, many of those streaks did come to an end.

The first was the five-year stretch of losing to Florida, Georgia, and Alabama all in the same season, a 17-game losing streak. That was broken on Saturday, and winning any one of those games was something the Vols had not done since 2009, when ironically, they beat the Georgia Bulldogs.

But the last time they beat one of these teams when they were ranked, or a ranked rival, dates back eight years to 2007, when again, they beat the Georgia Bulldogs. That was a 17-game losing streak also.

Tennessee’s CBS losing streak ended as well, which dates back to 2010. That was a seven-game losing streak that should have been broken.

But it is even worse in the CBS primetime slot, games typically called by Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson.

The last time Tennessee won a game in that slot, and the only time since Danielson moved to CBS, was in 2006 against the Alabama Crimson Tide. They came back to win that game at the end 16-13.

Saturday’s victory over the Georgia Bulldogs ended a 14-game losing streak in that slot.

It also ends a nine-game losing streak to ranked teams dating back to the South Carolina Gamecocks at home in 2013, Butch Jones’s first year.

And the last time the Vols came back from three scores down was in 2006 to the Georgia Bulldogs, again, when they were down 24-7 and won 51-33.

The last time they came back from 21 or more points down was 2005 at LSU, when they trailed the Tigers 21-0 in Baton Rouge at halftime and 24-7 going into the fourth quarter but won 30-27 in overtime.

Simply put, this game erased a lot of things hanging over the heads of Tennessee Vols fans for a long time, and hopefully that could mean something big for the future.

Getting over all of those humps, along with the hump of struggling in close games, has to be a huge plus for the mentality of this young but talented football team going into the bye week.

We will see very soon how Butch Jones and the Vols can take this new momentum.
