Early lines on ESPN have the Vols listed as 14.5 point underdogs against the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. You can see those lines here.
This weekend we could find out what Tennessee team we are dealing with this year. They showed something against the Georgia Bulldogs for sure. But now we can raise another question.
Is this just like that Lane Kiffin team in 2009? Or is it one of the Fulmer teams in the early 2000s? Remember, those Fulmer teams were famous for going on the road as double-digit underdogs and pulling off huge upsets against Top 10 teams. There was the Florida game in 2001, the Miami game in 2003, and the Georgia game in 2004.
The SEC Championship games in 2004 and 2007 along with the Alabama game in 2005 were close ones as well, and a list of other Top 10 teams they played well against on the road during this period include Georgia in 2002, and they beat Georgia in 2006 and also had an epic comeback against the LSU Tigers in 2005 in Baton Rouge.
But the last time we can say anything about the Vols showing up in a big road game is LSU in 2010 and Alabama in 2009, and they lost both games in heartbreakers.
So perhaps this game can represent a changing of the guard.
But it is nice to see Tennessee such heavy underdogs. Everybody loves playing football games with a chip on their shoulder.
The Vols now have the biggest one of the year. And it’s against Alabama.
