5. 2009: The Vols Pull out Black Jerseys Against the South Carolina Gamecocks

It was the highlight of the season that year. Oh, how foolish we all were to think of the bright future.

Lane Kiffin had re-energized the Volunteers fan base from the minute he stepped on campus in Knoxville the previous December, rubbing Urban Meyer and Florida Gators fans the wrong way, making splash hires for all of his staff, and tirelessly recruiting across the country.

All of that had fans ridiculously excited about the direction of the program at the time, and even though they were 3-4 going into a Halloween showdown with the Top 25 South Carolina Gamecocks, that excitement didn’t tie.

In fact, it increased after Tennessee was a blocked field goal away from beating the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on the road a week earlier.

So to keep up the energy and bring Tennessee into a new era, Kiffin spiked that excitement with one of the most memorable uniforms Tennessee ever wore. They came out in black jerseys and orange pants for a night game, perfectly fitting for Halloween.

The Vols capitalized on the night by beating the Gamecocks 31-13. Of course, the energy didn’t last. Kiffin left for USC at the end of the year, and the program sunk into an even worse state. But for on this night, fans had more energy than ever.
