The Tennessee Vols and Kentucky Wildcats are playing to keep their preseason expectations alive desperately.

They are also hoping to potentially finish the season in the Top 25. But with the Wildcats at 4-3 and the Vols at 3-4, the loser is likely to finish the season disappointed with the way it turned out compared to what they were expected to do at the beginning of the year.

Butch Jones is 2-0 vs. Mark Stoops, as both head coaches are in their third season. Both head coaches also want to show evidence-based improvement over last year.

And for Jones, that’s also to avoid being on the hot seat going into next year.

Tennessee leads the all-time series vs. Kentucky in football 77-24-9, and they beat the Wildcats every year from 1985 to 2010.

Given that, and given Tennessee’s 50-0 victory over Kentucky last year, all the psychological factors have got to be in the Vols’ favor, and it’s up to Kentucky to reverse that.

Some of the key match-ups for this game include which quarterback performs better, Joshua Dobbs or Patrick Towles, which defensive line is able to get more pressure, and who can establish a better running game, with Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara on the Vols and Stanley Williams on the Wildcats.

Dobbs and Towles both are among the best quarterbacks in the SEC, and both, in their own ways, could be selling themselves as future NFL quarterbacks.

This game is another chance for both of them to show what they can do.
