Bowling Green MAC Title Means Tennessee Vols Only FBS Team to Play Three Conference Champions

With the Bowling Green Falcons winning the MAC Championship Friday, the Tennessee Vols are the only team to play three conference champions on the year.

The Tennessee Volunteers finished the season with an 8-4 record, but the results of conference championship weekend is a testament to how good they are.

Butch Jones’s Vols are the only team in FBS to have played three conference champions on the year: Bowling Green, Oklahoma, and the SEC Champion.

Half of their non-conference games were against conference champions, and then they played the SEC champion as well.

Understand what this says about the Vols.

They played two College Football Playoff teams and three conference champions on the year, and they led all three of them in the fourth quarter.

This is all true for one of the youngest teams in all of college football this year.

The Vols were 1-2 against them, but they should have been 2-1 after blowing it against Oklahoma, whom they led 17-0.

While this is a season of what could have been for the Vols, it looks even more impressive considering whom they played.

Of their four losses, two were to Power Five conference champions, the other was to a division winner.

And another loss was a weird one to the Arkansas Razorbacks, the one bad loss of the year, but they still finished 7-5 and got on a roll after starting the year 1-3.

More from Vols Football

Considering their dominant 59-30 victory over Bowling Green, another conference champion, and their 38-31 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs, Tennessee’s 8-4 record is very impressive.

Finishing 9-4 will most certainly warrant a Top 25 finish given their schedule and how they were in every single game this year.

Regardless, the finish to this season only spells a ton of hype once again going into next year’s season, potentially with the Vols being a preseason Top 10 team.
