News broke on Tuesday that Tennessee football quarterback Sheriron Jones is transferring. This is the second time he left the Volunteers.

This time, it’s a little more obvious. Sheriron Jones is leaving the Tennessee football program for the second time, although now for a reason that probably makes much more sense given the Vols’ quarterback situation.

College football recruiting insider Ryan Bartow broke the news of the transfer on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

This is the second time Jones transferred out of the Tennessee football program.

More from Vols Football

At the end of the 2015 season, he left for the Colorado Buffaloes. But the former four-star quarterback returned later and became great teammate during the 2016 season.

However, even his intangibles weren’t enough to justify him staying with the program. And nobody can blame him for leaving.

The Vols have a clear two-way race for this year’s starting quarterback between junior Quentin Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano.

After a full spring of reps, it seemed clear Jones would never get the chance to start.

So transferring is the right move for him. The guy clearly has talent as a four-star dual-threat quarterback. He just wasn’t going to get the chance to showcase that for Tennessee.

With his departure, the Vols now have Will McBride along with Guarantano and Dormady as their three scholarship quarterbacks.

And Zac Jancek is a walk-on who is still on the roster as well.

Even though Jones wasn’t going to play this year, his transfer could have an effect on the Vols. And it could be a positive effect, even though that’s no reflection on him.

With Jones gone, there’s no distraction of a wildcard stealing the starting quarterback job. At the same time, it’s more reps for Dormady and Guarantano.

So it’s a win-win for everybody.
