Tennessee football recruiting went south Wednesday. The Volunteers offered a Mississippi running back for 2018 and a Louisiana running back for 2020.

Butch Jones and his staff took Tennessee football to the Gulf Coast for recruiting on Wednesday and took a major look towards the future. The Vols offered a four-star running back from Columbia, Miss. for 2018 and another running back from New Orleans for 2020.

The first offer was for the 2020 running back, Ashaad Clayton. The New Orleans prospect hasn’t even reached the age to qualify for ratings on many recruiting services.

But he’s already on Tennessee football’s radar.

Clayton announced the offer on Twitter.

According to Patrick Brown of GoVols247, Clayton is also fielding offers from the Kansas Jayhawks, Georgia Bulldogs, and Tulane Green Wave.

Clayton has a unique size right now at 6’4″ 184 pounds. You assume he’s going to put on more weight as time goes on. But that’s oddly tall for a running back. He uses his long strides to outrun people, and right now he’s getting away with overpowering them.

It’ll be hard to know if he can keep that up, though.

Here is a look at his highlights.

After offering Clayton, the Tennessee football program turned to more pressing matters. Later that night, they offered running back Jarveon Howard out of Columbia, Miss.

Howard announced the offer on Twitter as well.

A four-star on Rivals, Howard is fielding offers from 12 schools, according to Grant Ramey of GoVols247.

That includes the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Memphis Tigers.

At 5’9″ 195 pounds, Howard is more of a stocky back who does have solid cuts and decent speed.

If he puts on some muscle and keeps his agility, he could be an extremely hard running back to control in the SEC because of his short stature. Think about what Ray Rice was.

Here is a look at his highlights.

As you can see, lots of times he just took direct snaps and made the plays himself. There wasn’t much coaching involved.

But there was a lot of talent, so he has a great chance to be a very good back. And the Tennessee football running back situation is uncertain in the future after John Kelly and Carlin Fils-Aime.

So Howard would be a great pickup for Jones and his staff.
