Tennessee football: Vols senior punter Trevor Daniel on Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List
Tennessee football senior punter Trevor Daniel expects a big year with the Volunteers and is on the 2017 Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List.
Tennessee football players are starting to get some recognition on preseason watch lists. A day after Ethan Wolf was named to the Mackey Award Watch List for best tight end, punter Trevor Daniel was named to the Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List for the nation’s best punter.
Daniel was one of 29 candidates named to the list in a press release sent out on the award’s website Wednesday. The Augusta Sports Council announced the candidate.
Once a walk-on, Daniel shockingly beat out fifth-year senior Nate Renfro and superstar freshman Tommy Townsend for the starting job in 2015.
And he hasn’t looked back.

Over the past two years, Daniel has punted the ball 130 times for 5,862 yards. That’s an average of just slightly over 45 yards a punt. Of those 130 punts, 53 went inside the 20, 43 went for 50 yards or more, and 44 were fair-caught.
However, his numbers took a bit of a dip last year. His average went from 45.7 yards per punt to 44.6 yards per punt. He was also on the Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List in 2016.
So he does have a bit more to prove in the field of consistency.
And as he enters his senior season, he has the perfect opportunity to do that. After all, Tennessee football does have a reputation as Punter-U.
When you include the Colquitt brothers and Matt Darr, this is one position where they have been very strong. However, the Vols have never had a Ray Guy Award winner. Could Trevor Daniel be the first one to do it for Tennessee football?
The list of midseason candidates will come out on Halloween. On Nov. 16, the 10 semifinalists will be revealed, and the top three finalists will be revealed on Nov. 21.
The winner will be revealed on Thursday, Dec. 7 during ESPN’s College Football Awards show.
