Positives for former Vols Josh Dobbs, LaTroy Lewis, Cam Sutton in Week 3 of NFL Preseason
There were good signs for former Tennessee Volunteers Josh Dobbs, Cam Sutton and LaTroy Lewis in the third week of the 2017 NFL Preseason.
The NFL Preseason continues as fans get psyched for the start of the college football season. And a few former Vols are making some headlines in this year’s preseason.
During Saturday night’s week three games, three rookie Vols got to see some serious action. Their performances and experiences were good signs for all of them when you look at their chances to play this year.
Let’s start with the highlight of the day.
LaTroy Lewis, an undrafted free agent, is now getting his shot with the Oakland Raiders. The former defensive end who backed up Derek Barnett and Corey Vereen raised some eyebrows by picking up some impressive stats his first two games.
Then came Saturday, and Lewis returned a fumble for a touchdown.
Now, as the Raiders.com staff noted in an article, he’s really generating interest. The guy did not have the star quality of Barnett, but he did produce and was reliable. So this isn’t too much of a shock.
But let’s move onto the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin’s team has two rookie Vols. And both got positives signs from Week 3 of NFL Preseason.

The headliner is former Tennessee football quarterback Joshua Dobbs. Dobbs started the first two preseason games as the Steelers’ quarterback. However, he was inconsistent and struggled mightily.
With this game supposed to be the dress rehearsal game, we didn’t expect him to see much more action. That wasn’t the case.
Dobbs came in again and played two series. Why is this significant? Because it means Tomlin and the coaches are dead serious about Dobbs’s future. Ben Roethlisberger is still clearly the starter, but using Dobbs in the third preseason game of his rookie year shows that the Steelers organization has high expectations for him in the future.
Another rookie from Tennessee, cornerback Cameron Sutton, also generated interest with his play on Saturday. Sutton came in and picked up three tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a pass defended.
Bryan DeArdo of 247Sports notes that Tomlin complimented Sutton’s play after the game. However, he also said that Sutton has a lot of ground to make up before the next game.
That indicates that they are going to give the guy a former look. And it also shows that they’re serious about potentially using him more in the future.
Dobbs, Sutton and Lewis all should be happy about how they played during Week 3, the dress rehearsal of the NFL Preseason.

Sure, Josh Malone and Alvin Kamara are generating interest. But they already had expectations. These three Vols, especially Lewis, had low expectations surrounding them for this year. But their teams seem to be serious about their value. And that spells good news for them.
