It’s been my fundamental belief for a long time that punters are among the least important players on a football team, while kickers are the second most important players. Analytics show you should only punt a few times in a season anyway.

More from Vols Football

However, when it comes to Tennessee football facing the Georgia Bulldogs, punting is a huge deal. And the Vols need their elite senior punter in Trevor Daniel to win this game.

Special teams always seems to have an impact in this series. Georgia has a history of punt return touchdowns against the Vols.

A punt return TD in 2001, a blocked punt safety in 2002, and a punt return TD in 2005 all made huge differences in this game.

Meanwhile, Daniel is a huge reason Tennessee won the last two games against Georgia. His punting alone was elite in 2015, and in 2016, he had a punt that was pinned inside the five, and on the ensuing drive, Tennessee forced a fumble and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown.

So Tennessee doesn’t win either of the last two games against the Dawgs without Daniel. As a result, history says it’s crucial that he continue the tradition of Tennessee football as Punter-U for the Vols to win this game.

And given how badly the Dawgs appear to outmatch the Vols right now, Tennessee needs an advantage in this field to win. They have it. And they have to benefit from it if they’re going to pull out a victory.
