Tobias Harris turns down an extension from the Los Angeles Clippers. The former Vol is betting on himself in the 2019 free agency class.

We see this type of thing all the time. Players will decline massive deals to bet on their playing ability in free agency. Sometimes it works, and other times it doesn’t.

I am willing to bet Latrell Sprewell would love to have that $21 million in his bank account. And, who can forget about Bonzi Wells who turned down a five-year $38.5 offer from Sacramento?

Most recently the former Kentucky stand out, Nerlens Noel, turned down a four-year $70 million deal to test the free agency market. He ended up with a one year deal for $4 million.

In this case, Tobias Harris recently turned down an $80 million extension with the Clippers. But, that doesn’t mean he won’t stay in LA. The Clippers will have the opportunity to sign him in free agency like everyone else.

He will become an unrestricted free agent next summer looking for a max deal. The Clippers will be able to offer him up the most money. It could look something like a five-year $188 million contract. Other teams will only be able to offer four-year $145.5 million. Which is still a lot of money, who would complain about $145 million?

Harris has become a stable for his teams and has turned out to be a terrific NBA player. The past two seasons he has started all 82 games and has put up respectable numbers. In the last 32 games with the Clippers, Harris was averaging 19.3 points per game while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out three assists per game.

We look for Harris to score over 20 points a game next season as he hits the prime of his career. It will be interesting to see how Harris continues to progress during his NBA career. If the upcoming season is anything like the past, he should have his best season yet.
