The NFL preseason started on Thursday night, and a host of Volunteers had good nights. John Kelly and Evan Berry were two in particular that stood out.

Despite a handful of rough seasons for the Tennessee football program, there are a lot of former players that made an impact in the Thursday night games of week one of the preseason.

One player that stood out was former running back John Kelly. Anyone that watches the NFL knows that Todd Gurley is the starting running back for the Los Angeles Rams. In fact, he is one of the best running back in the league.

However, he can’t run the ball every down, and he will need some help. And, that’s where former Vol John Kelly comes into play. Kelly should have an opportunity to play quite a bit next season.

In his first action of the preseason, Kelly had 13 attempts for 77 rushing yards. He also accounted for two catches for 14 yards out of the backfield.

Kelly had a long run of 40 yards and looked unstoppable. He should have a fabulous season, and if you’re a fantasy football player, Kelly might be a good sleeper. Check out this post that fellow site-expert had about drafting John Kelly.

Another former Vol had a good first preseason game. Kick returner, Evan Berry had two returns for 53 yards with a long of 30. This mimicked the type of performance that Berry displayed with the Vols.

Berry could make a career out of being a great return guy. Just look at Devin Hester. Hester will go down as one of the best return man in NFL history.

Other former players to see action thus far in week one of the preseason was Tyler Bray who was 36-of-61 for 400 yards in two games. Another quarterback that saw action was Josh Dobbs who was 9-of-13 for 91 yards.
