No.5 – Deandre Baker, Defensive Back

Deandre Baker might be the best defensive back in the SEC and possibly the entire nation. He could have gone pro last season but decided to come back for one more run at a national title.

It’s never too early for NFL mock drafts, even though we are just three weeks into the NFL season. According to Pro Football Focus, Baker is listed as a top-five draft pick. Of course, a lot can change, but it just shows how good he is.

So far coming back to school was the right decision. And, so far this season Baker has been tested. He held South Carolina’s wide receiver Deebo Samuel to 33 yards. This past Saturday at Missouri he held Emanuel Hall to zero receptions.

He is a shutdown corner that is not going to make it fun for Marquez Callaway or Jauan Jennings.

With already an interception and a forced fumble watch out for Baker to make a play in the secondary or even off a corner blitz. It’s hard for the Vols offensive line to block anyone, let alone a player as good as Baker.

Don’t be surprised to get a big play from Baker early to set the tone on defense after a sluggish 14-point win over Missouri.
