Tennessee basketball: Vols haven’t fared well against No.1 ranked teams in the past
Tennessee Volunteers (21-12) vs. Florida Gators (32-2)
March 15, 2014 – Atlanta, Georgia
There is an old saying, “the third time is the charm,” and Tennessee had a chance to take down the Gators in the SEC Tournament semifinals, but they came up just a tad short. Each game the Vols got a little closer at beating the Gators.

In the first game, Florida easily won 67-41. Tennessee played them to a nine-point game later in February but still came up short. In game number three the Vols had a chance and honestly should have won the game.
I wasn’t writing back then, but I remember saying I thought Tennessee had more talent. Florida was good with players like Scottie Wilbekin, Patric Young, and Casey Prather. They played well as a team, but Tennessee had more talent.
Jarnell Stokes, Jordan McRae, Jeronne Maymon all found themselves in double figures scoring 13, 15, and 10 respectively. They just didn’t have anyone who could stop Patric Young. Young scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
The game was tied at 49 with 2:49 left in the game. Partic Young made a jumper to put the Gators up two points. Tennessee then turned the ball over on two straight possessions which pretty much ended the game.
